Cancer Treatments and Your Heart Health
Cancer treatments are often critical in improving a patient’s chance of survival from a deadly disease. But while chemotherapy and radiation therapy have proven invaluable in treating cancers, studies have shown that these very same lifesaving techniques can have an effect on the health of your heart.
What can you do? Being aware that cardiovascular complications can result from cancer treatment gives you a starting point. You should ask to be assessed for any cardiac conditions when starting cancer treatments; at the same time, if you have an existing heart condition your cardiologist should be informed of a cancer diagnosis so that any ongoing treatment can be modified if necessary.
